Post-production 9:16

Post-production 9:16

new

Videos contain certain recurring audiovisual elements. At MTU, these elements have a uniform design, which ensures that the video is integrated into the MTU world.

An MTU video always begins with the opener. There are several intros to choose from, both with and without transitions.

Various bumpers in the form of headlines or lower thirds in different versions can be used as design elements during the video.

Each video ends with the closer. There are three different outros for each MTU entity. Apart from the opener and closer, not all elements have to be used in every video.

However, if an element is used, it must be used according to existing rules. Templates in MOGRT format are available for this purpose. Texts, titles, and, in some cases, cinematic elements must be customized according to the content. The volume of the video’s audio can of course be adjusted in sound mixing.

Technical requirements

new

For the 9:16 format (1080 x 1920 px), the standard specifications that are defined by MTU for all AV media apply. In keeping with current standards, the final video output should meet the following requirements:

9:16 video

  • Codec: ProRes 4:4:4:4, incl. Alpha, or at least ProRes 4:2:2
  • Aspect ratio: 9:16
  • Resolution: 1080 × 1920 px progressive
  • Frame rate: 25p
  • Data rate: 100 Mbit/s or at least 50 Mbit/s

Audio:

  • Codec: AAC - 320 Kbps
  • Sampling rate: 48 kHz

Note: All basic elements (Adobe After Effects) are already provided in the 9:16 format.

For social media applications, the frame rate in the After Effects document can be changed from 25 fps to 30 fps.

Grid

new

To ensure the most consistent appearance possible, the design of elements for AV media is based on the MTU Grid. This can be loaded into the editing program as a PNG file in order to position texts and graphic elements:

The grid is constructed as follows:

Format Aspect ratio Protected space per page Usable area without protected space Grid tiles
9:16 1080 x 1920 px 60 px 960 × 1800 px 8 × 15 modules

The specifications have been selected so that the pixel dimensions and the grid comply with the social media guidelines.

Protected space

new

Protected space in the 9:16 format is essential for keeping key content in stories from being obscured by user interfaces. Major elements should be placed in the center, while the following areas should be kept free of important content to ensure it remains visible:

Top: approx. 14%
Bottom: approx. 20%
Left: approx. 6%
Right: approx. 6%

These values follow the current recommendations.

A corresponding template serving as a transparency mask is available as a PSD.

Use of the MTU logo

new

MTU videos generally feature the appropriate corner logo. In 9:16, the logo has a height of 110 px and is positioned in the top left-hand corner of the grid. The only situation in which the corner logo is not used is in the opener and the closer with animated MTU logo (to avoid duplication). With opener transitions, the corner logo is already provided in the template.

HD Height 110 px, positioned at x = 60 px and at y = 60 px

The corner logo is white with a transparency of 70%.

The corresponding templates are available as PSD files with the correct transparency in UHD and just need to be positioned in the editing program:

1. Intros and transitions

new

As in the other formats (UHD, HD), various animations are available for the intro. All of them can be found in this file:

1.2 Transitions

2. Subtitles

new

Subtitles are usually created in the editing program in order to be able to load SRT files. The AEX file contains a design template for the use of subtitles in the 9:16 format:

3. Headlines

3.1 Headlines and sublines

new

Headlines and sublines can be displayed in the video.

3.2 Headline boxes

new

To put headlines on an image in a video, besides the normal headline/subline templates with gradient, there’s the option of inserting text boxes. The boxes automatically adapt to the length of the text.

4. Label

new

It’s also possible to insert a label in the 9:16 format. Its position takes into account the protected space that could be hidden by overlays:

Label color Font color Color of key visual HEX
White MTU dark blue MTU dark blue #003963
White MTU sky blue MTU sky blue #0096e0
White MTU berry MTU berry #cc1d56
MTU dark blue White White
MTU sky blue White White
MTU berry White White

5. Names

new

Various options are available for displaying the name of the person on screen:

  • Name with gradient
  • Name in box
  • Name with gradient and line

7. Closer

new

The video can close in three different ways. Usually, the closer with claim and logo is used. The closer with logo alone is used for shorter versions, while the closer with logo and hashtag is used for personnel and HR topics:

  • Closer with claim and logo (AE, MA or PW)
  • Closer with logo (AE, MA or PW)
  • Closer with logo and hashtag (AE, MA or PW)
