Video structure and elements

new

Videos contain certain recurring audiovisual elements. At MTU, these elements have a uniform design, which ensures that the video is integrated into the MTU world.

An MTU video always begins with the opener. There are several intros to choose from, both with and without transitions.

Various bumpers in the form of headlines or lower thirds in different versions can be used as design elements during the video.

Each video ends with the closer. There are three different outros for each MTU entity. Apart from the opener and closer, not all elements have to be used in every video.

However, if an element is used, it must be used according to existing rules. Templates in MOGRT format are available for this purpose. Texts, titles, and, in some cases, cinematic elements must be customized according to the content. The volume of the video’s audio can of course be adjusted in sound mixing.

Format

new

These guidelines describe the use of templates and graphic elements designed for the 16:9 Ultra High Definition, or UHD, format. If these elements are used in the standard HD format, they must be scaled to 50%.

UHD 3840 x 2160 px
HD 1920 x 1080 px (scaled to 50%)

Grid

new

To ensure the most consistent appearance possible, the design of elements for AV media is based on the MTU Grid. This can be loaded into the editing program as a PNG file in order to position texts and graphic elements:

The grid is constructed as follows:

Format Aspect ratio Protected space per side Usable area without protected space Grid tiles
UHD 16:9 3840 × 2160 px 120 px 3600 × 1920 px 15 × 8 modules
HD 16:9 1920 × 1080 px 60 px 1800 × 960 px 15 × 8 modules

The specifications have been selected so that the pixel dimensions and the grid in HD format comply with the social media guidelines.

Fonts

new

MTU generally uses the free Google font Noto Sans as its corporate typeface. The typefaces Regular, Bold, and Italic are used, in both mixed capitalization and (in headlines) in uppercase.

Use of the MTU logo

new

MTU videos generally feature the appropriate corner logo. In UHD, the logo has a height of 220 px and is positioned in the top left-hand corner of the grid. The only situation in which the corner logo is not used is in the opener and the closer with animated MTU logo (to avoid duplication). With opener transitions, the corner logo is already provided in the template.

UHD Height 220 px, positioned at x = 120 px and at y = 120 px
HD Height 110 px, positioned at x = 60 px and at y = 60 px

The corner logo is white with a transparency of 70%.

The corresponding templates are available as PSD files with the correct transparency in UHD and just need to be positioned in the editing program:

1. Intro and transition

new

To start a video with an intro, different design options are available for all brands of the MTU family:

  • Intro logo animation with transition (preferred)
  • Intro logo animation without transition
  • Intro text and logo animation with transition (preferred)
  • Intro text and logo animation without transition

Since the compositions in After Effects contain effects that can’t be converted into a template for Adobe Premiere, an Adobe After Effects master file is available for implementing the more complex intros, which is easy to edit. The texts can be edited directly in all compositions. For the start and end videos, PLACEHOLDER_1 (start video) and PLACEHOLDER_2 (end video) are located in the EDIT area, where the videos can be positioned accordingly. The different intros then change automatically.

All animations can be found in the file:

2. Subtitles

new

Subtitles are usually created in the editing program in order to be able to load SRT files. There are different templates for the animated lower thirds, which can be positioned and edited as MOGRT files:

2.1 Subtitles blur

2.2 Subtitles box

2.3 Subtitles and name of the person on screen

If the name of the person on screen is to be displayed at the same time as the subtitles, corresponding MOGRTs are available:

Within a longer video, the one- or two-line subtitles can be set in either a static MTU box or a static gradient. The MTU box takes MTU gray-5 at 60% transparency. The gradient is set in MTU dark blue. A half-gradient is used for subtitles, i.e. from 1080 px at 0% opacity to 2160 px at 100% opacity. The box sits on the bottom edge of the grid, so it has a distance of 120 px to the bottom edge of the image. There is a corresponding PNG template for both applications:

For displaying names without a subtitle box, the following template is also available:

3. Headlines

3.1 Headlines and sublines

new

Headlines and sublines can be displayed in the video. For better readability, the MOGRT template contains a gradient. If it’s still too hard to read the head- or sublines, the video image can be blurred, specifically using a Gaussian blur with 20 px blur.

3.3 Headline boxes

new

To put headlines on an image in a video, besides the normal headline/subline templates with gradient, there’s the option of inserting text boxes. The boxes automatically adapt to the length of the text.

It may be useful to add blur to the video image under the headline boxes for better readability, specifically using a Gaussian blur with 20 px blur.

4. Label

new

To place a note, a label is available as a MOGRT file and can be given different colors:

Label color Font color Color of key visual HEX
White MTU dark blue MTU dark blue #003963
White MTU sky blue MTU sky blue #0096e0
White MTU berry MTU berry #cc1d56
MTU dark blue White White
MTU sky blue White White
MTU berry White White

5. Names

new

Various options are available for displaying the name of the person on screen if no subtitles are shown. The person’s name and position can be displayed in a small MTU box in MTU sky blue at 60% transparency or on a half-gradient with an animated line:

6. Bumper (chapter divider)

new

Bumper text and corner logo with transition (preferred)

Bumper text and corner logo without transition

For these dividers, the following MOGRT files are available for the editing program:

7. Closer

new

The video can close in three different ways. Usually, the closer with claim and logo is used. The closer with logo alone is used for shorter versions, while the closer with logo and hashtag is used for personnel and HR topics:

  • Closer with claim and logo (AE, MA or PW)
  • Closer with logo (AE, MA or PW)
  • Closer with logo and hashtag (AE, MA or PW)

The various closers are available as MOV files with an alpha channel and can be easily positioned over the video material.

7.2 Closer with logo

7.3 Closer with logo and hashtag
